Trouble in Pakistan

Pervez MusharrafThe situation in Pakistan is very unsettling. President Pervez Musharraf is caught between a rock and a hard place and is holding onto power by the end of his fingernails.

What we have there is a nuclear power being attacked from all sides by militant muslims. Musharraf has had his own forces defecting saying they will not fight against their muslim brothers. Musharraf has been under heavy criticism and had a fatwa on his head since allying with the West in the Global War on Terror.

It appears that the primary front of the war is moving to Pakistan since al-Qaeda is ceding Iraq to the West and the Taliban is moving from Afghanistan into the wilderness areas of Pakistan. As Zardozz points out, the prize for jihadists is a state with nukes at their disposal. If they succeed in overthrowing Musharraf we will have a nuclearized islamic state. Mullahs with nukes.

This is a very complex situation that does not have simple cut and dried answers. I believe that Musharraf is trying to keep his country out of the hands of radical islam. Only time will tell. In the meantime, we do know that we can’t have the Taliban or Al-Qaeda in control of Pakistan.
